PORTA Srl was founded in Turin in 1936. The company was soon recognized as an expert in manufacturing key operated drill chucks which, until that time, were largely imported from the United States. The following years saw the company establish itself as it gained a national reputation as a reliable manufacturer of high quality drill chucks.

In 1948 the keyless drill chuck launched by PORTA in the Italian market was an immediate success due to its practical use. During the same time the basic range of drill chucks production was expanded with some machine tool accessories such as revolving centres for lathes, tapered arbors for chucks and reducing sleeves.

In 1960, after a period of large demand for portable electrical tools, the company made the necessary investment in order to adapt its production to the demand of changing market and in 1961 PORTA opened a new factory in an area of 10.000 square metres.

Traditional manufacturing equipment, no longer competitive because of limited productivity and high running costs, were gradually replaced by more sophisticated automatic transfer equipment in order to obtain a leading position in the national and international tooling market.

The 80s were marked by economic and politic crises which necessitated companies across Italy to re-structure and organize themselves to increase their adaptability and reduce business risk. In order to remain competitive, the philosophy of manufacturing everything in-house was replaced with the interesting idea of entrusting specific manufacturing operations to qualified outside suppliers. Productivity too was increased with the introduction of automatic feeders, flexible assembly lines and a numerical control lathe for limited production of chucks with very high accuracy and precision demands.

Porta , throughout the years, has continued to streamline and develop its supply chain so shipments are always dispatched with maximum rapidity. As far as the national market is concerned the entire clientele, of about 2,500 customers, is entrusted to a widespread group of agents who operate all across Italy. The international market , speard over 30 countries is entrusted to importers. Porta has invested in the careful selection and appointment of both its national as well as international agents and today PORTA exports over 50% of its production. This percentage is expected to grow in the future. As part of the process of expanding into the international tooling market PORTA U.K., a subsidiary company was set up in 1988 in Sheffield.
